When it comes to natural hair loss remedies, the market is saturated with false promises and ineffective products. In fact, any of the so-called remedies that have not been approved by the FDA are most likely rip-offs, and there are very few places to turn for unbiased, accurate information. A scientifically proven medical solution does exist, however, that can reverse male pattern baldness in 66 percent of men.
The answer is the drug finasteride, also known as Propecia, which doctors also prescribe for treating prostate problems. This may not be the solution you’re looking for if you want to take a more natural approach, but the good news is that several herbs and nutritional supplements work just like Propecia and can similarly treat and reverse male pattern baldness. For hair loss in women, a much more complex problem, many natural health practitioners believe that you can also treat and reverse the condition with the same natural treatments. Following are some of the most effective natural remedies for hair loss that have been scientifically proven to work.
Saw Palmetto
The cause of male pattern baldness, according to medical science, is a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). A by-product of testosterone, this hormone shrinks and eventually kills the hair follicles. The less DHT allowed to reach the hair follicles, the less hair you’ll lose. Finasteride works by preventing the body’s production of the enzyme (5-alpha-reductase) that converts testosterone to DHT. Saw palmetto, an herbal remedy often used to treat enlarged prostate, does almost exactly the same thing as finasteride. It stops DHT from binding to the hair follicles, which stops and even reverses hair loss.
In his book “Alternative Cures,” author and herbal medicine expert Bill Gottlieb recommends taking 160mg of saw palmetto twice daily, once every morning and once every other evening. Choose a product that contains 85 to 95 percent fatty acids and sterols, which ensures the herb’s potency as a natural hair loss remedy. Also, make sure the product is labeled as “concentrated and purified” for the best results.
Stinging Nettle and Pygeum
Pygeum, an herb often used to treat benign prostate hypertrophy, also blocks the production of 5-alpha reductase, and stinging nettle enhances its effects. Taken together, these herbs make an extremely effective hair loss natural remedy.
Gottlieb recommends taking 50 to 100mg stinging nettle and 60 to 500mg pygeum standardized to contain 13 percent beta sterols each day. Start with the lower dosage and slowly work up to the higher dosage for the best results. No adverse side effects have been reported from taking these herbs together, but it’s always best to start small and see how your body reacts to any new substance before increasing your dosage.
Green Tea
Although it may be one of the most unexpected hair loss natural remedies, green tea actually works to prevent, treat and reverse male pattern baldness. Like the other beneficial herbs listed above, green tea inhibits the production of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that allows DHT to shrink and kill the hair follicles.
For the best results, drink 1 to 3 cups of the tea every day in conjunction with taking either saw palmetto or stinging nettle and pygeum. You will achieve noticeable results within a few weeks to months, depending on the severity of your condition.
Disclaimer
Although natural hair loss remedies can provide a safe and effective way to treat male pattern baldness and hair loss in women, it’s always best to check with a qualified medical professional before self-treating with any herb or nutritional supplement. Do not take the herbs above without your doctor’s okay if you currently take prescription medications, as side effects or interactions may occur.
